Malikah Fernandez, originally from Memphis, TN, began her training at nine years old with Dance Dynamics, under Annette Wilson and Natalie Fotopoulos. She moved to Chicago, IL in 2010 to train with Deeply Rooted Dance Theater’s professional training program and joined their Emerging Artist Ensemble in 2011. While in Chicago, she has performed in musical theater such as The Wiz with the Madhi Theater Company and the Triumphant Love Dance Series, under the production of K. K. Tyler Entertainment with choreography by Dome Lorusso. She has been a dancer in Deeply Rooted’s Emerging Choreographer’s Showcase under the direction of Joshua L. Ishmon since 2011. In 2014, she toured with Deeply Rooted Dance Theater as an apprentice to the first company, performing as a soloist and corp member in New York City, Baltimore and Chicago. She performed the repertoire works of Ferrotype (2006), Lambs to Lions (2013), Sweet in the Morning (1991) and Heaven (2004) under the direction of Kevin Iega Jeff, Gary Abbot and Nicole Clark Springer. After moving to Phoenix, AZ for personal reasons, Fernandez has performed with Desert Dance Theater and Rachel Wight Company in various dance festivals. she has been a member since 2017.
